A richly illustrated exploration of traditional and modern systems of analyzing symmetrical, decorative patterns.
The focus is on design development, progression and variety, emphasizing the possibilities for infinite interpretations of basic styles. The systems – grid, proportion, tessellation, symmetry, motif, and style and culture – are each introduced with a brief historical overview and technical description followed by various examples, some of which were printed but most were hand-drawn by the authors. The book also includes an extensive bibliography.
