Good & Evil in the Garden

Barbara Hodgson with wood engravings by Shinsuke Minegshi

Ten short essays about plants that have been variously used throughout history for both their beneficial and lethal effects, each accompanied by a botanical wood engraving, Arabic name and zodiac sign.

Set in Garamont type cast by Jim Rimmer at his Pie Tree Press & Typefoundry. Text & engravings printed at HM: text on cotton paper, engravings on gampi. All papers were made specially for this project by Reg Lissel. Edition of 45 press-numbered copies (including five hors commerce) signed by both author and artist, issued in two states (see below). Small 8vo, 50 pp. 2003

Although the author had published a number of fiction & non-fiction books, this was her first letterpress, limited edition book. She went on to produce a number of elaborate limited editions with binder Claudia Cohen, exploring various aspects of paper & graphic arts.

This edition was issued in two states:

Copies 1–10 specially bound Terry Rutherford: sewn on four vellum slips (two natural, two dyed green) and laced through a limp vellum case. The title was hand-lettered on the spine by calligrapher Martin Jackson. The frontis in these copies was hand-printed by Shinsuke on gampi, mounted on Rives BFK, and signed. The book was contained in a clamshell box covered in paste paper made by Rutherford.

Copies 11–40 (and the 5 A.P.) bound at HM: sewn on vellum slips, with a sewn headband; lined; and laced into a heavy handmade paper wrap, with a slipcase.
