Uncommon Deities
David Sylvian, with drawings by Atsushi Fukui
Previously unpublished text presented as a broadside.
Set in Dante and printed in three colors on dampened sheets of Arches Cover (22 x 15 inches). Edition of 30 copies, signed by David and Atsushi. Issued in two formats (see below). 22 x 15 inches. 2010

When HM’s interest in working with David was expressed (through the kindness of Harold Budd), he sent “Uncommon Deities,” a text originally written to accompany a catalogue for an exhibition of Atsushi’s work, which did not end up happening. David also asked Atsushi to create some original drawings for inclusion. The result was a broadside issued in two formats.
Copies 1–10 were were trimmed into thirds (each measuring 6 x 12.5 inches), and laid into a triptych portfolio case covered in Japanese cloth, with two inset printed labels, made by Claudia Cohen. When opened, the triptych measures approximately 18 x 12.5 inches.
Copies 11–30 were issued as broadsides.
Two related hors commerce items were also printed during production of the broadside. Atsushi created a total of nine different mushroom drawings for the project, only two of which were used in the final design. A poster showing all nine of the drawings, along with the broadside’s title and contributors’ names, was printed on Reg Lissel’s handmade paper in a run of approximately a dozen copies (distributed only among the participants).
A small book, titled Basidia, reprinting all nine of the mushroom drawings by Atsushi, with a title page and colophon set in Dante was also printed, on Reg’s paper, in an edition of just 10 numbered copies. These were uniformly cased at HM in handmade paper (various colors) over boards, with the artist's initials printed on the front and a spine label. The entire edition of 10 copies was given to the artist for his personal use.
